Part four of the longest and slowest storm

One thing at a time.

My second con experience

September 30, 2013

After skipping AWA last year from what I thought was a very light and generally bad event schedule (the only two things I really wanted to do were at the same time on the same day and two days basically had nothing going on for me), I went back this year. I had to. After all, ZUN was there.

Yes, ZUN’s first appearance outside the country and his first at any convention (or so I was told by staff) was at AWA this year, not even an hour’s drive from my house. Sadly, I didn’t get to see his panel. I had been stuck in the back of the line for Yuu Asakawa’s autograph (the only autograph I got this year) and we had run over the time. I stopped to get a drink and when I got to the ZUN line, it was 35 minutes before the start of the panel and security was (rather rudely, which I later found out wasn’t just my experience) turning people away. It sucked pretty hard. After all, he was the reason I wanted to go so much. I did manage to catch his other two panels, though they weren’t the same, content-wise, as the one I really wanted to go to. It was very interesting. I’m hoping a recording of his panel shows up on YouTube at some point. There were apparently some super interesting questions. I later found out that according to ZUN, canon of all previous games doesn’t matter once the new one comes out. Thought that was interesting. And I guess it matches his stance on PC-98’s canon.

Speaking of Touhou, I attended the Touhou fan panel this year. Lots of fun. The host was in front of me for the final panel for the Japanese guests and apparently he thinks his panels suck, but hey, I liked it. I just regret not going in 2011, but it was kind of early for me to get up and drive all the way to the con. I sat next to a Meiling that I think might have actually been the one in the 2011 con post, though I didn’t realize that until last night. I wonder if it actually was her…

Beyond that, I mostly just did a lot of shopping. Here’s everything I snagged:

As with last time, I picked up a Taiga figure. Two, actually. So now I have four Toradora figures, three of which are Taiga. Also, you may (or may not) notice that pack of Toradora cards for Precious Memories. Bought ’em just to have ’em.

And here are the trading figures I got. (None opened for display this year because I don’t have room for anything in my house, so they all went back into the box until I can find room for them.)

And yes, that is Tenshi on the AWA 2013 shirt, and yes, that is ZUN’s name on it (not signature, though, just printed name). He designed the shirt for this year and put Tenshi on it because of the peach on her hat. It’s considered official Touhou merchandise. (ZUN’s autograph policy is to only sign official Touhou merchandise and we were told that the shirts do count.)

I’m a little upset that the prices for the con seem to be going up next year. Pre-reg for next year at the con is normally $20, but it was $35 this year. Either costs are going up all the way around next year or they’re just narrowing the margins for the price difference to keep profit up. I’m not sure. Either way, I’m paid up and I look forward to next year.

Touhou 13 Announced

Not a whole lot to say here other than I’m impressed we have four selectable characters. I can’t say Youmu is who I would have gone with were it my choice, but she’s still a good choice.

And one to grow on.

One more 1CC. The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. This stupid game gave me so much damn trouble trying to 1CC it. Red Magic is evil. EVIL. There were three times where I made it to Red Magic and lost. Even though I made it through this time, I still lost too many bombs by dying. I could have finished with more lives. No other spell card has ever made me so overconfident only to smack me in the face at the most inopportune time.

Replay’s up at Gensokyo.org, will be up on YouTube later. Links in the sidebar.

And another Touhou 1CC

Perfect Cherry Blossom. Did it with SakuyaB. I had been trying with SakuyaA and gotten close several times, but I kept making a bunch of stupid mistakes. I still made a ton this time, but I finished the run by catching a few of the ones I usually make. I had a decent finish as far as life count goes, I guess. I wasn’t pushing it as close as my MoF run for sure. It helps that Sakuya has so many damn bombs.

The replay will be in the sidebar links (Gensokyo.org and YouTube).

Managed another Touhou 1CC

Mountain of Faith this time. Did it with ReimuA on my first time beating the game.

I’ve also taken the liberty of uploading replays since the last time. I put the files at Gensokyo.org’s replay section and I also uploaded recordings to YouTube. MoF’s YouTube upload won’t be up until tomorrow. I have to check the compressed videos to make sure they’re okay.

FYI, Touhou 12.8 is freaking hard.

August 15, 2010

I played it some yesterday and it’s damn hard. One of the hardest Touhou games I’ve played in a good long while. The freeze mechanic is fun, but you have to abuse it just to not die horribly every half minute.

Yay Cirno, though ❤

TH13 can suck it. We’re getting a Cirno game. CAN’T. WAIT.

I suck slightly less again.

1cc’d Imperishable Night this time through FinalB, unlocking the Extra Stage. It’s about damn time I 1cc’d a Windows game. Too bad it was an easy one. Still doesn’t feel like much of an accomplishment. I’ll either try plugging away at something like PCB or EoSD next or I’ll stick to PoFV until I unlock everything.

I’ve also tried my hand at the fighting games, but IaMP is the only one I don’t completely suck at, so I’m not really making any progress. I’ve beaten IaMP with Marisa’s first bad ending and I almost beat Stage 5 once without having to continue, but I wouldn’t have made it any further than the second bad ending. I’m having a really hard time playing on a keyboard and I can’t get a good controller to try my luck with. Not having luck getting my PS3 controller to work either.

Also, as I mentioned last time, I’ve tried my hand at the newest game, Double Spoiler, but I have really only played it on and off for short periods of time and Level 6 is as far as I’ve made it. It’s pretty low on my priority list for Touhou games, especially since I’ve left the main ones and even the first camera game unbeaten. We’ll see how long it takes me to do anything noteworthy in another Touhou game, I guess.

I feel like I suck slightly less now.

March 13, 2010

1cc’d my first Touhou game yesterday (on Normal). Admittedly, it was only Lotus Land Story, which is on the easy side of the Touhou line-up, probably the easiest game in the series. However, I feel like it’s a pretty big accomplishment for me. I’m glad that I finally managed to unlock a damn Extra Stage. Of course, I barely 1cc’d it (killing the last boss with no lives left), so I’m getting curbstomped in the extra stage (which some people say is the hardest in the series, making it a stark contrast to the difficulty of the rest of the game).

Anyway, that’s my first major accomplishment in the Touhou series, so I’m pretty proud of myself. I doubt I’ll beat the Extra Stage for a while, so I’ll probably move on to another game or two and see if I can’t beat those. I only have four characters left to unlock Extra Mode in Phantasmagoria of Flower View, so maybe I’ll do that next. I’d also like to beat Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream with every character and I’ve so far only done it with one, so I guess that’s on the to-do list, too. Heh, I guess I’m settling for all of the easy stuff first.

Anyway, Double Spoiler should be out today, so that’s just one more game to work on whenever I can get my hands on it.
